Maine's Torch Race Honoring  Pan

Pagan athletes in Maine compete once a year, running for a torch in the distance, sometimes on a beach, sometimes in the woods or through a field.
The winner, thereafter called "fleet of foot and beloved of Pan", is awarded a silver medallion depicting Pan on one side and a laurel wreath for victory on the other.

The 2007 race was held during the Beltane on the Beach celebration at Popham Beach. We had a field of very fast and determined Pagans, running about 150 yards across wet sand for the torch. The winner, by yards this time, was once again the amazingly fast LeStat Roberts!

May he be henceforth called fleet(er) of foot and beloved(er) of Pan!

We think we'll set a win limit of three times for one runner...if he beats the field again, he gets to be fleet(est), and then give mere mortals a chance. Seems only fair...

The 2008 race will be held at Popham Beach, again in conjunction with the Beltane celebration. You could be the next name in the list of winners!

The race is sponsored by the Immanent Grove.
