Agricultural Record Keeping and Data Analysis Software
I developed and used at Lakeside Orchards, a Microsoft Excel based pesticide record keeping database.
The Kahiltna database is a pesticide application record keeping database I initially developed using the Microsoft Excel 4 macro language. The current workbook based version, with Pivot Table worksheets, macro functions, and Excel VBA code, will run on a PC and possibly on a Mac, and requires Microsoft Excel 2000 or later for Windows. The program has been run on equivalent Microsoft Excel versions for the Mac but has not been tested on the Mac platform. I was not satisfied with the capabilities of some of the affordable record keeping programs that were available so I developed my own. The advantage of developing your own program is that it is easy to add additional features as you need them. Thus the program has grown over the last few years.
As indicated by the Visa and Mastercard logos above, we know accept payment for the program using a credit card over the telephone.
The most important feature of this program is the capability for multiple simultaneous record entry. This is a tremendous time saver. The records for all the blocks with the same pest that received the same product and product application rate per acre can be entered with a single mouse click. The database keeps records on all items required by the EPA and the state of Maine, including the ability to input weather data at any interval desired. (Maine Drift Regulations require weather data at least every 2 hours or oftener if needed to reflect changes.)
Data Analysis Capabilities
Several sheets use analysis tools built in to Excel to examine the database for spray amounts and costs on a per block, a per acre, and a per orchard basis are included. Cost to control a pest can be determined. The database itself, of course, can be analyzed directly using the Data/Filter/AutoFilter function. If you do this, be sure to save without changes when you are done. Extensive analysis would perhaps be better done after copying the database to a new worksheet.
Worker Protection Notification
The program has the capability to make and print a WPS worker notification chart with all required data . The data on this chart is independent of the data in the record keeping database. The user can input the start and stop times, and select the orchards and chemicals that are expected to be used in the pesticide application. The chart can be printed and posted. If the spray application goes as planned the chart can be left as it is. If weather or an equipment malfunction causes the application to differ with the posted data, a new chart can easily be made and posted before or after the user enters the spray application data into the spray database and enters the weather data.
Tree Row Volume Spray Rate Calculator
A new addition is a TRV spray rate calculator that allows the calculation of the spray rate in gallons per acre for almost any sized tree, row spacing, tractor speed, and concentration.
Processor Pesticide Application Information Reporting
A form has been added that queries the database for application data on a particular block and variety. This historical data is recorded on a form that can be printed and sent to the processor to satisfy the growers reporting requirements. This form is based on processor reporting forms currently used by Michigan apple processors.
Who Can Use the Program
Although this program was developed for tree fruit, it can be adapted to many other forms of farming. If you have a question about program applicability, please feel free to contact me. Since I wrote the program, I can easily adapt it to a specific agricultural requirement or add requested capabilities to better serve the pest control reporting requirements of a particular commodity or user group. The following versions are currently available.
- Tree Fruit Production-amount of product per acre
- Tree Fruit Production-amount of product per 100 gal applied
- Tree Fruit Production-amount of metric product per hectare
- Tree Fruit Production-amount of metric product per 100 liters applied
- Row Crop-Boom Sprayers and Granular Applicators
- Nurseries and Greenhouses
Tree Fruit Production
The demonstration example is based on tree fruit production and uses a product application rate of amount of product (lb, oz, qt, etc) per acre. This is an application rate many fruit growers are comfortable with. Growers in some parts of the country feel that a product application rate of amount of product per 100 gallons of mix applied is more realistic and appropriate. The program is available in forms that support either application measurement methodology. Be sure and specify, when you order the program, which version you want: amount per acre or amount per 100 gallons.
The following types of applications are available for tree fruit production:
- Every Row
- Alternate Middle
- Spot Treatment
- Perimeter Row
- Herbicide Or Other Boom Sprayer
New-Metric Capability for Tree Fruit Production
I have recently added metric Tree Fruit versions. The program is now available in both metric amounts of product applied per hectare and metric amounts of product applied per 100 liters of tank mix. The program will only be available in English.
Row Crop Production
This version is designed for row crops such as potatos, tomatos, and anything that is grown in rows and has pesticide applications made by a boom type sprayer with a known gallons per acre application rate or a granular applicator with a known pounds per acre application rate. Knowledge of the number of gallons of tank mix or pounds of granular product applied to a field is required. With this data input, the program will provide all the data analysis described above under tree fruit production.
Golf Course Maintenance
The row crop version described above is currently being used by several golf course managers.
Nursery and Greenhouse Production
This version is designed for nurseries and greenhouses where several different application types may be employed. The product application rate is in amount of product per 100 gal. The number of gallons applied needs to be known. With this data input, the program will provide all the data analysis described above under tree fruit production.
The following types of applications are available for nursery and greenhouse production:
- Every Row
- Alternate Middle
- Spot Treatment
- Perimeter Row
- Dositron Hand Gun
- Boom Sprayer

FOR PC USERS:
After viewing the screen shots and the documentation for the program, if you think that this program can ease your pesticide recordkeeping chores, you can purchase the program. If you have any questions, or are interested in determining the use of this program in other types of agriculture, contact me at the email or postal address below or telephone me.
The program is available as either a self-extracting file, or the uncompressed application can be made available. In addition to the application, the self-extracting file includes the files below, which are available here for your review.
The documentation available below pertains to the Tree Fruit Production, amount of product per acre version. Literature for the other versions is appropriate to that version.
readme.txt a 4KB file
legal.txt a 3KB file
pestdata.doc a 100KB file
FOR MACINTOSH USERS:
The same software may work on the Macintosh platform as long as you are running recent versions of Microsoft Excel and Word. The program has been run on equivalent Microsoft Excel versions for the Mac but has not been tested on the Mac platform.
Those interested in purchasing the program should contact me. The cost of the program is $50.00. We accept Visa or Mastercard by telephone, or checks in $US. Most commercial banks provide this service for non-US purchasers.
